Job Description

The Track Worker is a Maintenance of Way position of Transtar’s East Ohio Valley Railway located in Hannibal, Ohio.  The Track Worker is responsible for the repair, maintenance, and performance of the railroad track, associated structures, and components. As a Track Worker, you will perform general labor duties and use various types of tools and equipment.

Job Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with all railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations, and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).
  • Perform physical labor using hand tools and equipment to construct, alter, repair, maintain, and demolish railroad tracks, associated structures, and components.
  • Carry and place track materials using hand tools such as tie tongs, rail tongs, rail forks, lining bars, shovels, and jacks.
  • Use various types of tools and equipment, including tampers, regulators, backhoes, torches, hammers, jacks, and other mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic tools.
  • Raise tracks, turnouts, crossings, and rails with track or power jacks.
  • Perform routine maintenance and troubleshoot problems on equipment.
  • Cut associated materials with oxygen-acetylene torches, rail saws, cut off saws, and cold chisels.
  • Drill holes with gasoline, pneumatic, hydraulic, and electric drill motors.
  • Cut brush and vegetation from the right-of-way.
  • Spray switches, angle bars and joints with oil for lubrication.
  • Complete written forms and reports, including FRA reports, as required.
  • Update rules and manuals to assure continuous compliance with all federal regulations.

Job Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Must have or be qualified to obtain and maintain a Class B Commercial Driver’s License (CDL).
  • Lifting and carrying a minimum of 75 pounds.
  • Covering distances afoot up to five (5) miles per day, on railroad right of way, negotiating steep grades and rough terrain, without assistance.
  • Working outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Travelling to various job sites, including those that could require overnight stays and those that require short notice mobilization.
  • Adherence to safety procedures/guidelines at all times.  Safety is our core value which requires you to wear safety protection such as hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, protective clothing, and boots with metatarsal protection.
  • Punctuality, consistent attendance, self-direction and work collaboratively in a team environment for the success of the operations.
  • Working any shift, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week including holidays.
  • Successfully pass pre-placement background check and medical & drug testing (hair and urine).
