Job Description

The Train Service/Utility Worker is a Transportation position of Transtar’s East Ohio Valley Railway located in Hannibal, Ohio.  The Train Service/Utility Worker is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of locomotives.

Job Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with all train orders, signals, and railroad rules and regulations for safety, operations, and the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA).
  • Maintain responsibility for safe and efficient operation of the locomotive.
  • Assist and instruct train crews to couple and uncouple cars, operate switches, and make minor repairs to railcars, including replacing heavy couplings or air brake hoses.
  • Operate track switches (visually check switch condition and direction) to change the direction of the engine or cars within yard limits or on the main railroad; apply or release hand brakes to switch or perform other duties.
  • Line switches.
  • Read and understand the book of rules, timetables, bulletins, train orders, waybills, placards, safety instructions, and other written or printed material.
  • Prepare required daily reports and switch lists, either manually or with a computer; fill out forms, including train orders.
  • Inspect the condition of the train and equipment in movement and while stationary.
  • Couple air and electrical connections between locomotives when making up trains.
  • Perform maintenance services to the locomotive (brake shoes, oil, sand, and fuel).
  • Communication with management, customer service, crew members, and connecting railroads.
  • Inspect rail cars for standard defects that need repair.
  • Operate machinery and equipment to aid in the repair of rail cars.
  • Document repairs made, and parts used during the repair process.
  • Drill holes with gasoline, pneumatic, hydraulic, and electric drill motors.
  • Cut brush and vegetation from the right-of-way.
  • Spray switches, angle bars and joints with oil for lubrication.
  • Complete written forms and reports, including FRA reports, as required.
  • Update rules and manuals to assure continuous compliance with all federal regulations.

Job Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Lifting and carrying a minimum of 75 pounds.
  • Covering distances afoot up to five (5) miles per day, on railroad right of way, negotiating steep grades and rough terrain, without assistance.
  • Working outdoors in all weather conditions.
  • Travelling to various job sites, including those that could require overnight stays and those that require short notice mobilization.
  • Adherence to safety procedures/guidelines at all times. Safety is our core value which requires you to wear safety protection such as hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection, protective clothing, and boots with metatarsal protection.
  • Punctuality, consistent attendance, self-direction and work collaboratively in a team environment for the success of the operations.
  • Working any shift, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week including holidays, on-call.
  • Successfully pass pre-placement background check and medical & /drug testing (hair and urine).
